In a context of rapid technological change, Europe continues to invest in research and innovation as a driver of competitiveness, sustainability and social progress. From artificial intelligence and robotics to health, climate technologies and advanced materials, new solutions are constantly emerging from universities, research centres, start-ups and European consortia.
However, technological excellence alone is not always enough to generate real-world impact.
Many promising technologies do not fail because they are technically weak. They fail because they are not sufficiently connected to the conditions that make adoption possible: clear user needs, regulatory alignment, market readiness, financing, stakeholder involvement, communication, exploitation pathways and social acceptance.
This is especially relevant in the European innovation ecosystem, where research excellence often coexists with fragmented markets, complex regulatory environments, long validation processes and diverse social, economic and territorial realities. Turning research results into solutions that can be adopted, scaled and sustained requires much more than a successful technical demonstration.
The challenge of moving from research to adoption
In European projects, innovation is often developed within highly specialised research environments. These settings are essential for generating knowledge, testing new concepts and advancing scientific understanding. But the transition from research to deployment requires additional layers of work.
A technology must respond to real needs. It must be understandable and useful for potential users. It must fit within existing or emerging regulatory frameworks. It must be supported by viable business or exploitation models. It must be communicated effectively to the right audiences. And, in many cases, it must build trust among citizens, professionals, institutions and decision-makers.
When these dimensions are not addressed early enough, even strong research results can struggle to move beyond the project environment. They may remain as prototypes, reports, pilot experiences or isolated technical achievements, without reaching the actors who could apply them in practice.
What makes innovation succeed?
Successful innovation is rarely the result of technology alone. It usually depends on the ability to connect different dimensions from the early stages of development.
One of the first is the definition of clear use cases. Technologies become more relevant when they are designed around concrete problems, real implementation contexts and specific user needs. This requires involving stakeholders not only at the end of the process, but throughout the innovation journey.
A second key factor is regulatory and policy alignment. In Europe, regulation can be a powerful enabler of innovation when it creates trust, common standards and clear pathways for adoption. At the same time, regulatory uncertainty or lack of alignment with policy priorities can slow down deployment.
Financing and exploitation strategies are also essential. Many innovations require sustained support before they are ready for market or institutional uptake. This means identifying possible routes for exploitation, understanding value chains, assessing market opportunities and anticipating the resources needed to move from validation to implementation.
Social acceptance is another critical element. This is particularly important in areas such as artificial intelligence, health, security, robotics, energy or climate technologies, where adoption depends not only on performance, but also on trust, ethics, accessibility and perceived usefulness.
Finally, communication plays a strategic role. Innovation needs to be visible, understandable and credible. Without clear communication, even relevant results may fail to reach policymakers, industry, investors, public authorities, citizens or other potential users.
The role of Social Sciences and Humanities
This is where Social Sciences and Humanities become central to innovation.
SSH approaches help projects understand behaviours, needs, barriers, perceptions and expectations. They support stakeholder engagement, participatory processes, social impact assessment, ethical reflection, user acceptance and policy relevance. In other words, they help ensure that innovation is not developed in isolation from the people, organisations and systems it is meant to serve.
Human-centred innovation does not mean slowing down technological progress. It means making it more robust, more relevant and more likely to succeed. By integrating social, economic, regulatory and behavioural perspectives, research projects can design solutions that are not only technically sound, but also usable, responsible and aligned with real-world contexts.
From impact as a promise to impact as a strategy
In European R&I, impact should not be treated as a final section of a proposal or a set of dissemination activities at the end of a project. Impact needs to be designed from the beginning.
This means asking key questions early: Who needs this solution? What problem does it solve? What barriers could prevent adoption? Which stakeholders need to be involved? What regulatory or policy frameworks are relevant? What exploitation route is realistic? What capacities are needed for uptake? How can results be communicated in a way that supports trust and adoption?
When these questions are integrated into project design and implementation, research is more likely to generate outcomes that continue beyond the project lifecycle.
